The uncanny history of The Badinovs' founding members is so unusually incredible you would think it was made up on some secret Russian dossier. Musically, the St. Paul-based band proudly wears its pop-rock musical influences like Red Army badges of honor. But they will be flying their true rock 'n' roll colors when they celebrate the official release of their new album "The Big Picture" at the Hook and Ladder. Comrade rockers, Johnny Rey & The Reaction will open. The Badinovs will also perform a short set as their previous incarnation, Smart Alex.
The Big Picture showcases the deep songwriting sensibilities of lifelong pals Pat Olberding and Mike Nilles, the Lennon-McCartney of the Twin Cities, the acute musical chops of classically trained keyboardist Bill Kelm, with a little help from their friends Doug Salmela, a bassist with more than a 1000 songs in his repertoire, drummer-for-life Tom Duda and multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Jamie Olberding, Pat's daughter-in-law.
