In 1853, amid an outbreak of cholera in the Swedish city of Uppsala, a dozen students gathered to sing the songs of composer Carl Michael Bellman -- and a legendary singing society was born. Taking their name from one of the compositions they sang that night (Bellman's Fredman's Epistle No. 14, Hör I Orphei Drängar), the world-class, 80-member Swedish men's chorus has become a bona fide Swedish institution, possessing a killer combination of "power, energy, and culture ... combined with professional technical and musical prowess" (Esa-Pekka Salonen). Now longtime artistic director Robert Sund brings the chorus back to America to conduct an eclectic program that runs the gamut from great romantic choral gems to beloved folk songs and gorgeously rendered contemporary compositions. As a special treat, this performance at San Francisco's historic Mission Dolores Basilica also features an appearance by acclaimed Swedish mezzo-soprano Katija Dragojevics.
