The beat goes on as the San Diego Symphony's percussion fest debuts with guest soloist and festival curator Steven Schick on the sticks and mallets. A prof at UCSD, Schick's also the music director of the La Jolla Symphony and Chorus and a champion of contemporary works, who's premiered or commissioned more than 150 new pieces. He'll take the lead on Roberto Sierra's percussion concerto Con madera, metal y cuero. Berlioz's boisterous Roman Carnival and Prokofiev's rhythmically powerful Symphony No. 5 are also on the bill for this Rafael Payare-conducted concert at Jacobs Music Center's Copley Symphony Hall.
