At first blush, the banjo and African music might strike you as an odd pairing, but the instrument so associated with American folk music actually has its roots on that distant continent. For years, two-time Juno Award-winning banjoist and composer Jayme Stone has been soaking up the influence of different musical traditions from around the world and mashing them up to great acclaim. His Lomax Project is a tribute to folklorist and field recording pioneer Alan Lomax. With his band of top-notch roots musicians, Stone combines Bahamian sea shanties, African-American a cappella singing from the Georgia Sea Islands, traditional Appalachian ballads, fiddle tunes and work songs collected from all walks of life. Filled with spellbinding singing, virtuosic playing and captivating storytelling, this concert at the South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center will include pieces from his upcoming release, Jayme Stone's Folklife.
