Long considered one of the finest trombonists in jazz, the late J.J. Johnson was able to transfer the bebop innovations of Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie to his unwieldy instrument in the mid 1940's. In August of 1954, Johnson teamed up with fellow Birth of the Cool session artist Kai Winding and the two trombone virtuosos embarked upon a long-standing musical relationship. Russ Phillips and Chicago's own Tom Garling head to Winter's Jazz Club to honor their trombone idols, with the help of pianist Bradley Williams, bass player Stewart Miller and drummer Bob Rummage.
