Led by pianist Daniel Pippin's lively narration, the Pocket Opera's been providing Bay Area audiences with its entertaining, enjoyable and easily understood versions of classic works for 40 years. Their latest, a concert version of Handel's Xerxes, sparkles with romantic intrigue, as the Persian king's unrequited love for a woman who happens to be in love with his brother results in all kinds of comic mischief and misadventure. The score boasts a number of thrilling arias, including "Ombra mai fu," the beautiful piece better known as "Handel's Largo". The company showcases some of the Bay Area's best vocal talents, who'll be accompanied by the Pocket Philharmonic chamber orchestra at the Hillside Club in Berkeley.
